“Why Do You Want to Work Here?” Is the Dumbest Interview Question on the Planet
Intel Brief
You're asking someone who's never worked with you to tell you why they want to work with you. They don't know you. They know the IDEA of you.

“Why do you want to work here?”
Dumbest interview question on the planet.
My #1 client — the guy who's made more hires through me than anyone else — never asks it.
Why?
Because it makes zero sense. You're asking someone who's never worked with you to tell you why they want to work with you.
They don't know you. They know the IDEA of you. Big difference.
Flush the loony-toon thinking; you're not that cool.
People want to work because they need to make money. Purpose and fulfillment are great, but they don't pay rent.
And the second someone stops making money? They're gone.
So when you ask “why do you want to work here,” what you're really asking is, “can you flatter me enough to get hired?”
To attempt to figure out how much more we can like-eachother before actually working together is a fools errand.
The better question is this:
“What would you need from us to do your best work?”
That's how you learn something useful about the interviewees.
Everything else is just hype.
