Macro Hiring Update Feb, 2026:
Looking at some data and from what I can tell... The job market is falling off a cliff.
January 2026: 108,435 layoffs, which is the highest since 2009. And the new hires number is only 5,306.
If we do the math, that's 20 people cut for every 1 hired.
AI is getting credit for about 7% of cuts... but what founder/CEO ISN'T talking about becoming more efficient through A.I.? I bet A.I. credit is a LOT higher than that and most companies tend to be more forward thinking.
Companies are figuring out they can make MORE money with FEWER people. Why wouldn't they work towards capitalizing on that as much as humanly possible?
So for us here at the Casino, here's what I think:
The market is flipping.
I've had multiple reps tell me in the last few weeks they've never really had to interview before. This is new for them and "strange".
It might FEEL strange but that's because the market is turning. Companies will have even MORE bargaining chips and will, to a much greater degree, continue to have their pick of the litter. Every job posting is gonna get 10x the applications it did six months ago.
So, my advice?
Reps: If you're in a good role right now, even if you're not making the big bucks, lock in. Everyone in the market is dealing with the same thing. Do NOT think you are the only one who's having to do more for less.
The grass isn't greener. The whole lawn is getting scorched.
If your offer has a great base, solid fulfillment and isn't killing you on the quota. Roll up your sleeves. Those things are literally going to be your currency in 2026.
This is the time to speed up and double down, not get cute.
The average already-lean team here in high ticket land will be getting EVEN leaner. Hiring isn't going to be at the same rate and caliber it has been.
We've already seen a massive decline in the quantity and quality of roles over the years as the space gets more competitive and we continue down the "winner takes most" track.
This is not the time to gamble on shaky commission-only gigs or unproven offers.
If you have a "mostly" good offer that checks enough boxes, Buckle up, or get ready to compete with everyone and their mother for the jobs that DO appear.
Stability needs to be your focus while those that keep chasing shiny objects get cooked and have to leave the Casino early before it gets fun.
