Why Sales Reps Churn Harder Than Amish Butter

Intel Brief

Retaining sales talent requires treating the relationship as a partnership and ensuring reps have a reliable way to get paid when marketing falters.

20 CSMs hired (not bad for a "sales" recruiter)

85% retention rate.

Compare that to the 85% churn rate on the sales side.

Funny how the “non-sales” (it’s still sales, let’s be real) roles are the ones sticking around.

Almost like… paying a living wage helps people stay.

Am I saying abolish commission-only?

Nope.

I love eating what I kill.

I’ve always made more on commission.

The problem isn’t commission-only —it’s the violent oscillations from hero to zero.

People have great months. But how many have great months every month?

(I’ll wait.)

JK, no I won’t. I can’t hold my breath that long.

Look, even though we're at the Casino,a lot of retention is simple — at least what you can control:make sure people have a way to get paid if they do the work.

If your people have a healthy runway, your culture probably is too.

I’ve seen founders step up and give a small stipend during bad marketing months.

That’s leading well.

Because it’s not the sales rep’s responsibility to fix your ad account, it’s yours, Mr. Founder.

If for some reason you are no longer able to provide what you promised that contractor when you hired them (5–6 calls a day),then YOU, my friend, need to pony up — not shove OB on them and keep their pay the same.

This is a partnership.

And sales reps churn harder than Amish butter when you forget that.
